Upgrading from NX 3.5.0 to version 5 and choosing the right product

The release of NoMachine 4 introduced many new features, but also changes in the names of the products and how the products are licensed. These changes still applies to NoMachine v. 5.

A major change is the virtual desktop functionality on Linux which has been moved to the new NoMachine for the Enterprise range. This means that the functionality of NX Free Edition is no longer available for free in the new versions. NoMachine Workstation takes its place in terms of functionality. NX 3.5.0 products continue to be made available for download in the customer area for subscribed customers.

The free to download product is NoMachine for Mac, Windows or Linux. It provides access to the physical display of the remote host. It does not offer SSH support nor, as already mentioned, the virtual desktop functionality for Linux. It provides one connection to the remote host.

There are also new features which add value to those who upgrade. E.g. NoMachine Enterprise Server, which replaces the NX Advanced Server 3.x, supports high-availability. NX Advanced Server did not offer this.

Now that the  functionality of "virtual Linux desktop" is a feature of the NoMachine for the Enterprise range, the number of virtual desktops is the key criteria in differentiating among the products offering this functionality. With the exception of the free to download NoMachine product, all other server products in the enterprise-oriented range permit unlimited connections. This is to promote the use of the software in desktop sharing and remote collaboration. What is counted is the number of virtual desktops which have been created on the server.

Here are the products offering virtual desktop functionality for Linux desktop environments:

- Workstation offers 4 virtual desktops.
- Small Business Server 10 virtual desktops.
- Terminal Server unlimited virtual desktops.
- Enterprise Server unlimited virtual desktops.

This is how the earlier 3.5.0 products convert into their corresponding NoMachine 4 (or later) product:

  • NX Free Edition -> NoMachine (free). Note that for SSH and virtual Linux desktop support NoMachine Workstation is required
  • NX Enterprise Desktop ->  NoMachine Workstation (single or pack)
  • NX Small Business Server -> NoMachine Small Business Server
  • NX Enterprise Server -> NoMachine Terminal Server
  • NX Advanced Server -> NoMachine Enterprise Server
  • NX Advanced Server Node -> NoMachine Terminal Server Node
  • NX Client -> NoMachine Enterprise Client

The introduction of new products:

NoMachine Enterprise Desktop - It provides access to the physical display of the remote host. It does not offer the virtual desktop functionality and therefore does not replace NX Enterprise Desktop.

NoMachine AVC Pack - An add-on for the free to download NoMachine, and Enterprise Client users who want to enable H.264 when connecting to NoMachine servers already H.264 enabled (remember that all servers in the "NoMachine for the Enterprise" range come H.264 enabled).

NoMachine Cloud Server - It provides access via web. Thanks to the implementation of this feature request, https://www.nomachine.com/FR09N03198, support for web sessions is going to be extended to more server products.
