NoMachine NX 4 Preview Release Announcement

ROME, Italy, December 21, 2010 - NoMachine is pleased to announce that the first technology preview version of NX 4 is ready for download. This version is intended to provide NX users with a preview of some of the features and functionalities that will be available with the upcoming official major release and is not recommended for production environments at this stage. This release marks an important milestone in the history of the company. Version 4 of the software, in fact, will be only available under a closed source license.

Among the most significant novelties offered by this preview there are:

  • A completely redesigned client GUI, named NX Player.
  • NX Virtual Desktop Workstation, the NX Server specifically for the deployment of virtual X11 sessions and applications.
  • A new concept for the server package: it provides all the software necessary to have an up-and-running installation, including NX Web Player to deploy sessions on the Web.
  • The ability to run sessions from any browser-enabled device.
  • Improved video and audio support.

The following are not currently available:

  • Support  for Web based access from mobile device.
  • The possibility of changing audio configurations at session runtime.
  • USB forwarding on Windows and Linux platforms.
  • Sharing of local resources and printing from client to server side.
  • Custom session types e.g. rootless sessions.
  • Session recording and built-in video player to play the video of the recorded session.

Important Notes

Upgrading the NX 3.x.x installation

Node and server subscription files have been updated for NX 4 version. For that reason, all the 3.x subscription files will have to be replaced to be able to work with the new server. At the time of the NX 4 official release, NoMachine customers will receive the updated version of the subscription files valid for the remaining time of their current subscription. At this preview stage, instead, it is strongly suggested to proceed with a fresh install of the server side components.

Compatibility
Even if NX 4 should maintain compatibility with the NX 3.x software, users are invited to use both client and server side software updated to be able to exploit all the new capabilities provided by NX 4.
