Using NX user profiles with NX 3.5.0

NX Server 3.5.0 has support for user profiles, with configurable access to applications and nodes.

The server gives the administrator the option to define a set of rules to create specific user profiles for the NX system or on a per-user basis.  When profiles are not configured, the server assumes that all is allowed and nothing is denied for the user accessing the system.

In particular, the administrator can:

  • - Specify which Desktop the user is entitled to access by setting the proper value(s) among:

    unix-application
    unix-cde
    unix-console
    unix-default
    unix-desktop
    unix-kde
    unix-gnome
    unix-script
    unix-xdm
    windows
    vnc
    shadow

  • - Apply restrictions on the list of available hosts, when the load balancing is enabled, by specifying the allowed/forbidden nodes for the user.

  • - Force the NX server to use a specific X window system startup script for that user by specifying session type unix-script and path to the script.

  • - Limit bandwidth available to each user.

  • - Forbid the user to run services (media, printers and/or shares) inside the NX session.
  • - Forbid the user to use features like the clipboard.

User profiles are always stored in the local db - '/usr/NX/etc/profiles.db'.

This will work also for users authorized by LDAP. Therefore, user authorization by LDAP can be combined with the use of profiles for these users in the local db.

User profiles are handled by the ruleadd option.
