GNOME 49 and KDE Plasma 6.8 drop X11 support: what this means for NoMachine users
GNOME 49 drops Xorg/X11 support in favor of the Wayland display server
Linux distributions which adopt GNOME 49, such as Ubuntu 25.10 Questing Quokka, Fedora 43 and any other distro that will adopt it in the future will rely on the newer Wayland display server which completely drops the X11 backend.
Since v10, NoMachine is able to run 'pure Wayland' virtual desktops with GNOME.
Connections to physical desktop (like with the Personal Edition or the Enterprise Desktop) are already supported by previous versions of NoMachine server.
In earlier versions of NoMachine, virtual remote sessions rely on X11, and do no longer work with the GNOME 49 desktop environment. Physical sessions, however, will continue to work as before as NoMachine fully supports Wayland in physical sessions.
KDE Plasma 6.8 drops Xorg/X11 support in favor of the Wayland server
At the moment, NoMachine v10 is not yet able to run 'pure Wayland' KDE virtual desktops. Work is in progress to extend native Wayland support also to KDE virtual desktops. KDE-Wayland is supported in connections to the remote physical desktop.
To run KDE virtual sessions, in the meantime there are several possible solutions:
1. Install another desktop environment compatible with X11, such as MATE or XFCE.
2. Use an earlier version of KDE which still supports Xorg.
3. Stay on an earlier version of your Linux O.S. where Xorg is still included.
NoMachine will continue to monitor these changes in Linux distributions and provide updates regarding work in progress about future compatibility and full support for Wayland-native virtual desktops.
