How to upgrade NoMachine products v7 to v8

NoMachine v8 has introduced new products in the Cloud Server and Terminal Server families and renamed some already existing products. In general licenses v7 are compatible with servers v8, but there are some exceptions. You can see new products, new names and when a license v8 is needed in tables below.

This release also changes the license format and how this unique license file must be installed.

From version 8 onwards, there will only be a single license file, server.lic, for each server side product, including for Enterprise Terminal Server Node. When replacing license 7 with the new v8 server.lic, the old node.lic file is simply ignored by server software v8 and no further actions are required.

Additionally, the product subscription and installed server type must match.

For example, a subscription for Workstation requires a Workstation software package , i.e. it's not possible to install an Enterprise Desktop package and apply a customer license for Workstation. The same applies to the Free Edition. You cannot install NoMachine Free Edition and then install a customer license 'Enterprise Desktop Subscription', for example.

If you try to install a customer license which is not suitable for the installed product, the error is "The subscription is not suitable for this server version."

Please note that if you have v.6 installed and you wish to upgrade to version 8, we recommend you first install v.7 and then proceed to map your product to version 8 according to the table below.

How to map your product version 7 with a product in version 8

You can find below a table mapping products v.7 (or v.6) to the corresponding products v8:

Notes

1) Upgrading from CS v. 7 and between cloud servers v.8

Upgrading from Cloud Server v.7 to any of the cloud server products is possible. Upgrading/downgrading between two different cloud server types v. 8 is also possible. This will also preserve all the nodes and the majority of other configurations installed. If you have specific configurations in place on your nodes, you can also contact support to verify this. Be sure to read the specifics of the cloud server product of your choice, before upgrading/downgrading your installation with a different one. Note also that when upgrading/downgrading it's necessary to apply the license suitable for the new product.

2) For multinode environments with Cloud Server v.7 in HA failover cluster:

Note that NoMachine changed its product configuration. The basic NoMachine Cloud Server product v.8 cannot be configured in cluster mode anymore. Upgrading will preserve all failover and high-availability functionalities already configured in the previous version, as long as you upgrade to the NoMachine Enterprise Cloud Server Cluster, the new NoMachine product tailored for this use. Please contact the Sales Team to find out how to switch to the NoMachine Enterprise Server Cloud Cluster.

3) For multinode environments with Enterprise Terminal Server v.7 in HA failover cluster:

Enterprise Terminal Server Cluster has replaced Enterprise Terminal Server when used in a failover cluster. Upgrading will preserve all failover and high-availability functionalities already configured in the previous version, as long as you upgrade to the NoMachine Enterprise Terminal Server Cluster, the new NoMachine product tailored for this use. Please contact the Sales Team or Support Team to find out how to switch to the NoMachine Enterprise Server Terminal Cluster.

4) As mentioned above, with version 8, there will be only a single license file, server.lic, for each server side product, including for Enterprise Terminal Server Node. The old node.lic file will be simply ignored by server v8, no further actions are required.

5) Subscription package and installed server type must match. A subscription for Workstation requires a Workstation package, an Enterprise Desktop installation will not accept a customer license for Workstation. A Terminal Server license must be installed in a Terminal Server installation and so on.
